This is the Winter 2010 schedule for Guitar classes. "Class" = group lesson. We also offer private lessons. Keep checking back for more classes. Guitar classes are given year-round with new classes starting at least once every month except December. If the following schedule holds no match for you, please check back often for changes and new class start ups. You may email us your comments, needs, and suggestions to customerservice@nobleschoolofmusic.com We recommend the following age-appropriate guide lines: Child (age 8 - 10) Tween (age 10+ - 13) Teen (age 13+ - 15) Adult (age 15+) Students may choose to enroll in a younger or older class by one level. For example, a Tween may be placed in a Child's class (one age group younger) or in a Teen's class (one age group older). Children age 4 to 7 may enroll in private lessons with us. Classes are 40 minutes long and meet once per week. Students will need to have a guitar that they can play on in class and that remains with them at home so they can practice between classes. If you do not have a guitar, you may buy or rent one from us. It does not matter what type of guitar (acoustic, electric, electric/acoustic) you get. It is of the greatest importance that the guitar be sized for ease of playing and enjoyment. Amps and stands will be provided during class. A class book will be required and is not included in the tuition cost. Students receive a 10% discount on all purchases after attending the first class (provided tuition is paid in full). All supplies needed for class are available for purchase at Noble School of Music. Classes meet at Noble School of Music located on the second floor in the American Countryside Farmers Market, 27751 CR 26, Elkhart, IN 46517. Classes enroll a minimum of 3 students and a maximum of 6. Classes that do not gather the minimum enrollment may be cancelled or combined with another class. Be sure to check back with us for changes. NOTE: The following descriptions apply to our 10 to 14-week semester classes. During the summer and close to the holiday season, the semesters are shortened to allow for vacation time and activities. Short sessions embark upon the same path as regular semester classes, but will not accomplish as much by semester end due to the shorter time span. Beginner classes are geared toward those who have had no prior training. Proper technique is stressed while learning basic chords and strum patterns. By the end of the semester, students should have a good foundation with a basic ability to accompany themselves or another instrument or vocalist. No note reading is required in Level One, however, students are introduced to the staff, G clef, time signatures, measures, and chord symbols. Students learn through strumming songs together. Beginner 2 classes finish the study of basic chords and strums, continuing where level one leaves off. More complex rhythms and strum patterns are introduced along with chords requiring some finger strength and flexibility. A song book may be used to encourage practice beyond the method book. Classes may be introduced to standard notation (note reading) if there is class interest and at the teacher's discretion. Upper Level Classes are planned according to the age, skill level, and interests of the class. Once a basic foundation has been achieved through Beginner and Beginner 2 classes or the equivalent, the direction of the class will be determined by the teacher. Since each class is unique, the topics studied will vary. Students learn through playing well-known Classic Folk, Christian, and Rock songs. ROCK classes are for those who want to skip the traditional way of learning the guitar and jump right into the basics of rock. Rock 1 covers rhythm guitar power chords and tablature reading. Rock 2 strengthens the skills learned in level 1 by adding riffs and basic lead playing. Use of a CD helps the student learn by playing with a real recorded rock band. For someone with no background, these are demanding courses. Unless the student can devote at least 30 minutes daily to practice, we recommend enrolling in our standard beginner class first. *New Class Offering: ROCK LEAD GUITAR classes are taught by our own Eric "The Shred Master" Spaulding, and are for players who want to take their guitar playing skills to the next level. Topics covered will depend on the interests of the class and may include tapping, sweep playing, tremolo, bending, alternate picking, and other advanced guitar techniques. A minimum one half hour of daily practice is recommended. (This is not a class for beginning guitar students.) A good foundation and understanding at all levels is the main focus at all times. In the Children's classes, the teacher will guide the students through a solid foundation in chords, strums, and (perhaps) standard note reading using well-known children's songs. Older classes may cover the use of a capo, tablature, standard notation, finger picking, and other topics of interest to the class. Music theory is introduced where appropriate at all levels for greater understanding. Rock classes are specific study courses and require a strong committment and diligent practice for best results. Don't know your schedule? Don't know if you can make all the classes? Be a Drop-in. Drop-ins are welcome to attend classes (provided space is available) for a cost of $15 per class. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
