Classes enroll a minimum of 2 students and a maximum of 6. Classes that do not gather the minimum enrollment may be cancelled or combined with another class. Be sure to check back with us for changes. Basic Beginner classes are geared toward those who have had no prior training. Proper technique is stressed while learning basic chords and strum patterns. By the end of the semester, students should have a good foundation with a basic ability to accompany themselves or another instrument or vocalist. No note reading is required in Basic Beginner. However, students are introduced to the staff, G clef, time signatures, measures, and chord symbols. Students learn through strumming songs together. Intermediate Beginner classes finish the study of basic chords and strums, continuing where Basic Beginner leaves off. More complex rhythms and strum patterns are introduced along with chords requiring some finger strength and flexibility. A song book may be used to encourage practice beyond the method book. Classes may be introduced to standard notation (note reading) if there is class interest and at the teacher's discretion. Upper Level Classes are planned according to the age, skill level, and interests of the class. Once a basic foundation has been achieved through Basic Beginner and Intermediate Beginner classes or the equivalent, the direction of the class will be determined by the teacher. Since each class is unique, the topics studied will vary. Students learn through playing well-known Folk, Christian, and/or Rock songs. ROCK classes are for those who want to skip the traditional way of learning the guitar and jump right into the basics of rock. Rock Beginner covers rhythm guitar power chords and tablature reading. Rock Beginner Plus strengthens the skills learned in Rock Beginner by adding riffs and basic lead playing. Use of a CD helps the student learn by playing with a real recorded rock band. For someone with no background, these are demanding courses. Unless the student can devote at least 30 minutes daily to practice, we recommend enrolling in our Basic Beginner class first. Children under age 12 are typically not be suited for Rock classes. However, if you feel your younger child is ready to seriously devote the practice time, we will consider an exception. A good foundation and understanding at all levels is the main focus at all times. In the Children's classes, the teacher will guide the students through a solid foundation in chords, strums, and (perhaps) standard note reading using well-known children's songs. Older classes may cover the use of a capo, tablature, standard notation (note reading), finger picking, barre chords, and other topics of interest to the class. Music theory is introduced where appropriate at all levels for greater understanding. Rock classes are specific study courses and require a strong committment and diligent practice for best results. Don't know your schedule? Don't know if you can make all the classes? Be a Drop-in. Drop-ins are welcome to attend classes sporadically (provided space is available) for a cost of $15 per class. | |||||||||||||||||||
